Row three Montmorency Quilt / Bordure 3 patch Montmorency

This row combines four-patch blocks and hourglass blocks. Let's start with the hourglass blocks. I prefer to work with squares rather than triangles for this block. Here is the method I use.

Cette bordure mélange des blocs four-patch et des blocs sablier. Commençons par les sabliers. Je préfère assembler des carrés plutôt que des triangles pour ce bloc. Voici la méthode que je suis.

Start with squares that are 1 1/4 inch larger than the finished block

I need a 3" block, so I cut my squares at 4 1/4 inch

Commençons avec des carrés qui mesurent 1 1/4 inch de plus que le bloc terminé

Je dois réaliser des blocs de 3", donc je coupe mes carrés à 4 1/4"

 

 Take 4 squares, two light and two dark

Pair them light/dark with right sides facing and trace two lines 1/4 away from the diagonal

Prendre 4 carrés, deux clairs et deux foncés

Mettez les deux par deux, foncé/clair, endroit contre endroit

  

Sew one hair's breadth from the line toward the sewing margin 

This compensates for loss of fabric with the folding

It is a little more obvious on this light fabric

C'est un peu plus distinct sur ce tissu clair

Cut on the diagonal

Couper en diagonale

Press and turn towards the dark fabric

Pair these blocks right side facing, light against dark, and trace again two lines as previously

Placer ces blocs par deux, clair contre foncé, et tracer deux lignes comme précédemment

Sew in the same manner

Coudre de la même façon

Cut on the diagonal

Couper en diagonale

Press 

Repasser

One half of the margin allowance will go one way and the other half the other way, thus forming a tiny four-patch at the back. This prevents bulking and makes quilting easier later on.

La moitié de la marge de couture est rabattue dans un sens et l'autre moitié dans l'autre, ce qui forme un petit carré four patch. Cela évite "un bourrelet" et facilite le matelassage par la suite.

Row Two Montmorency Quilt / Bordure 2 patch Montmorency

There are 5 rows around the central medallion. A border of pieced blocks alternates with a simpler border.

Il y a 5 bordures autour du médaillon central. Une bordure de blocs piécée alterne avec un montage plus simple.

This is the first one with half square triangles

Voici la première avec des carrés de demi triangles

And the second one, simpler, with squares of contrasting fabric in the corners. 

Et la deuxième, plus simple, avec des carrés de tissu plus vif dans les angles

I chose a bright blue checkered print which makes the centre of the quilt in cream and red stand out.

J'ai choisi un tissu vichy bleu assez vif qui fait ressortir le centre crème et rouge.

Before working on the third row, a little sewing with my 6-year-old daughter. 

She chose this pretty bird, which despite its obvious simplicity, took us a good hour to make!

Avant de poursuivre avec la troisième borure, un peu de couture avec ma fille de 6 ans.

Elle a choici ce joli oiseau, qui malgré son apparente simplicité, nous a pris plus d'une heure à réaliser!

Choosing the fabric, the little ribbon and the buttons in all my boxes was like treasure hunting for both of us

Trouver les tissus, le petit ruban et les boutons dans toutes mes boîtes a été une vraie chasse au trésor pour toutes les deux 

With baking, this is one of the craft activities we both love doing together.

Avec la confection de gâteaux, c'est l'activité manuelle que nous aimons partager toutes les deux.

I take care to place my half square triangles before sewing them together to balance the prints

I came across this cute cup yesterday and just had to have it!

I love the fact that it has a design inside too!

 Having a nice cup of tea or coffee in a pretty cup makes the experience much more enjoyable, don't you think?

Il n'y a rien de plus agréable que de prendre un thé ou un café dans une jolie tasse, ne pensez-vous pas?

Exploring Miami / A la découverte de Miami

With the autumn season, the days are now getting very nice with a lot less humidity, which encourages us to make the most of the cultural heritage of the area.

Avec la saison d'automne, les journées commencent à être bien agréables avec beaucoup moins d'humidité, ce qui donne envie de découvrir le patrimoine local.

This construction was meant to shelter the quay from waves

And was used to entertain guests too

People would arrive walking on this pretty Venetian bridge

 The park is magnificent too with something to always surprise the visitor

Welcoming shade of these huge trees covered in Spanish moss

Ces arbres immenses couverts de mousse espagnole apporte une ombre bien agréable

 An enchanting visit, the house, the gardens and the superb view onto the bay...

How I do my appliques / Comment je fais mes appliqués

I have looked at several appliqué techniques and tried Kim Diehl's technique, which really appealed to my meticulous streak: one secures the freezer paper shape on the wrong side of the fabric with a dot of glue, then irons the margin onto the waxy side. After appliqueing, one simply makes a cut at the back to remove the paper.

 But it did not work for me. I suspect this come from the fact that the tip of my iron is not precise enough to be used to iron a scant 1/4 inch, or/and my freezer paper is not good enough.

So this is what I do...

J'ai exploré plusieurs techniques d'appliqué et j'ai essayé celle de Kim Diehl, qui correspondait le plus à mon côté méticuleux:  on place la forme découpée en freezer paper sur l'envers du tissu avec un point de colle, puis l'on rabat la marge de couture sur le côté collant du papier. Après avoir cousu l'appliqué, on fait une petite coupure à l'arrière pour retirer la forme papier.

Mais cela n'a pas fonctionné. Je pense que mon problème est dû au fait que mon fer à repasser n'est pas assez précis pour faire coller une petite bordure de 6 mm, ou/et mon papier n'est pas assez bon.

Voici donc ce que je fais...

I trace and cut the shapes on the freezer paper

Je trace et découpe les formes sur le freezer paper

I iron them onto the RIGHT side of the fabrics, and cut leaving a margin of 1/4 inch. I then trace the shape on the edge of the paper with a mechanical pencil, as it is very precise

Je repasse les formes sur l'ENDROIT des tissus, puis découpe en laissant une marge de 6 mm, et je trace au crayon de papier à pointe fine au ras du papier

I then hold the shape, paper and fabric, in my hands and use the paper shape as my guide to make a crease all around with my fingers folding the margin onto the wrong side of the fabric

Ensuite je prends la forme dans les mains, papier et tissu, et j'utilise le papier comme guide pour marquer un pli tout autour avec mes doigts en repliant la marge de tissu sur l'envers

I then take off the paper and both the crease and the pencil tracing help me applique accurately the original model

Je retire alors le papier et applique la forme. Le traçage au crayon et la marque du pli m'aident à reproduire fidèlement le modèle en appliqué 

  

The pencil marking does not show on lighter fabrics as it is exactly in the crease where my needles makes the invisible stitches

Le traçage au crayon de papier est invisible puisqu'il est exactement dans le pli où mon aiguille pique pour le point invisible

A little applique for a change of pace / Un peu d'appliqué pour changer de rythme

While I let my basket quilt aside to "give it a think", I fished out of my box of ready to do quilts, this one by Minick and Simpson, which I have had for a while...
I love their patterns and their fabrics!

Tandis que je mets mon patch de paniers de côté pour me donner le temps de réfléchir... je suis allée chercher un projet, de Minick et Simpson, pour lequel j'ai mis de côté tous les tissus il y a déjà quelque temps...
J'adore leurs patchs et leurs tissus!

I then place the stems and secure them with pins

Ensuite je positionne les tiges et les maintiens en place à l'aide d'épingles à tête

I sew the inside curves first

Je commence par coudre la courbe intérieure
