Scandinavian Christmas Heart Quilt / Patch Coeurs de Noël Scandinaves

Remember this Christmas Table Quilt Pattern I am working on? After one week busy with the Christmas festivities, guests and family, I can get back to my project.

Vous vous rappelez ce modèle de patch de Noël sur lequel je travaille? Après une semaine très occupée avec les fêtes, les invités et la famille, je peux enfin reprendre cet en-cours.

The four beige fabrics I have chosen for the first border

from light to dark...

Les quatre tissus beige que j'ai choisis pour la première bordure

du plus clair au plus foncé...

Now added with the hearts in the corners 

Maintenant ajoutés avec les coeurs dans les angles

I love this fabric for the 1/2 " inner border but do not have enough to make 4 long strips

Let's try piecing it accurately, it should not show since this is going to be very narrow.

J'adore cet imprimé pour la bordure intérieure d'1/2 inch mais je n'en ai pas suffisamment pour faire 4 bandes. Essayons en piéçant précisemment, cela devrait passer inaperçu car cette bordure est très mince.

The inner border is now added, I knew it would look great!

La bordure intérieure est maintenant ajoutée, je savais que l'effet allait être superbe!

I now only have the outer border to add and the top will be finished.

This pattern is truly beautiful and this line of fabrics Midwinter Reds by Minick and Simpson is exactly in the spirit of this scandinavian quilt. A pleasure to work on it.

I cannot wait to see it finished!

Il me reste à ajouter la bordure extérieure et le travail d'assemblage sera terminé.

Ce modèle est vraiment magnifique et cette collection d'imprimés Midwinter Reds par Minick and Simpson est exactement dans l'esprit de ce patch scandinave. Un vrai plaisir de travailler sur ce projet.

Je suis impatiente de le voir terminé!

Last Sandinavian Heart / Dernier coeur scandinave 

Yesterday I put the last stitch to the fourth scandinavian heart. I am aware my embroidery work was particularly slow for this project as I took pain for my stitches to be similar in all 4 hearts.

Hier, j'ai mis le dernier point de broderie au quatrième et dernier coeur scandinave. Mon travail de broderie a été particulièrement long pour ce projet car je me suis appliquée à ce que les 4 coeurs aient des points similaires.

I came across some quinces at the supermarket and could not resist making some jam. The  perfume of the quinces cooking on the hob is a fond memory of my childhood and I wanted to experience it again.

Je suis tombée sur un arrivage de coings au supermarché et je n'ai pu résisté à l'envie d'en faire de la gelée. Le parfum des coings cuisant sur le gaz est un des chers souvenir de mon enfance et je voulais en retrouver l'odeur.

Now in English:

Wash and cut the quinces without pealing them

Add water to just below the top of the fruit.

Bring to a boil, simmer for 15 minutes and let it sit for at least one hour.

Filter the juice

 Add the juice of 1 lemon and weigh. You need 80g sugar for each 100g juice.

Bring to a boil and allow 1 mn of boiling for each 100 g of juice.

Here are the cooked quinces which I am going to use to make some puree and an almond quince pie.

Voici les coings cuits que je vais utiliser pour faire de la compote et une tourte aux coings et amandes.

These quinces make a honeyed color jam whereas the ones we use back home give a rusty color to the jam and their flavor is stronger.

Ces coings donnent une gelée couleur de miel alors que ceux que nous avons dans ma région natale donnent une gelée couleur ambrée beaucoup plus goûteuse.

Today we are going to fetch our Christmas Tree from a farm east of Dallas. It is going to be a fun outing for the children and quite an expedition!

Third Scandinavian Heart / Troisième Coeur Scandinave

The third Scandinavian heart did not take as long to embroider and I am glad I am nearing the end of the embroidery part of this quilt. As with every quilt, I like the variety of the tasks and am always happy to move on to a different stage.

Broder le troisième coeur scandinave m'a pris un peu moins de temps et je suis contente d'arriver bientôt à la fin de cette étape du patch. Comme pour chacun des projets que je réalise, j'aime la variété des tâches et je suis toujours pressée de passer à une étape différente de la réalisation.

I am not sure I will be doing much sewing this weekend as the temperatures in Dallas are going to be warm again. Outdoor activities will be the order of the day!

Je ne suis pas sûre de faire beaucoup de couture ce weekend car les températures à Dallas vont à nouveau être très douces. Activités d'extérieur à l'ordre du jour donc!

Gingerbread cakes and hearts / Pains d'épices traditionnels et coeurs en pain d'épices

Here is the baking I have been engrossed in for the Christmas Market on Sunday. Two kinds of spiced breads, traditional and with orange marmalade, and gingerbread hearts, which were later decorated with white icing by a friend, more artistic than myself. 

Voici la pâtisserie qui m'a bien occupée ces derniers jours pour le marché de Noël de dimanche. Deux sortes de pains d'épices, traditionnel et à l'orange, et des coeurs en pain d'épices traditionnel, qui ont ensuite été décorés de glaçage blanc par une amie, plus artistique que moi.

I found the recipe for the traditional Saint Nicolas gingerbreads HERE . They are even better then the ones I had from the supermarket in Lorraine.

J'ai trouvé la recette des pains d'épices traditionnels de la Saint Nicolas ICI. Ils sont mêmes meilleurs que ceux que j'achetais au supermarché en Lorraine.

I have also continued with my embroidery and now have the second Sandinavian heart to show you.

J'ai aussi continué mon travail de broderie et peux donc vous montrer le deuxième coeur scandinave.

 

Two more to go and no time to lose with the holiday season just around the corner... I have not yet started on anything, wanting to prolong this respite just after Tanksgiving.

Encore deux coeurs à broder et pas de temps à perdre car la période des fêtes est toute proche... Je n'ai encore rien commencé, désirant faire durer un peu cette période de calme juste après Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving break and a little embroidery / Weekend de Thanksgiving et un peu de broderie

This is what I have to show for 2 days of cooking...

Et voici le résultat de deux jours de cuisine...

The main course buffet: turkey, red cabbage, cornbread dressing, green beans, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravy, chestnuts

Le buffet du plat principal: dinde, chou rouge, pain de maïs, haricots verts, patates douces, sauce aux 

canneberges, châtaignes

And the desserts: pumpkin pie, pecan pie, apple pie, chocolate croissant pudding and custard

Et les desserts: tarte au potiron, tarte aux noix de pécan, tourte aux pommes, pudding de croissants et chocolat et crème anglaise

Thanksgiving is a truly wonderful American tradition and, over the years, I have loved learning the recipes typical of this celebration.

Thanksgiving est une tradition américaine vraiment très belle et j'ai beaucoup aimé, au fur et à mesure des années, apprendre à cuisiner les recettes typiques de cette fête.

We took the opportunity of the weekend break to take a little trip to Beavers Bend State Park, Oklahoma. Lots of trails to walk in the forest.

Nous avons profité du weekend prolongé pour faire un petit voyage à Beavers Bend State Park dans l'Oklahoma. De nombreux sentiers pour faire des marches dans la forêt.

Deers come close to the lodge early in the morning and at sunset to be fed corn.

Des chevreuils viennent près de l'auberge tôt le matin et au coucher du soleil pour quémander du maïs.

My favorite with its dark eyes and dark edges ears.

Mon préféré avec ses yeux foncés et ses oreilles bordées de noir.

 And a little trip to neighboring Arkansas...

Et un petit saut dans l'Arkansas voisin...

It is a simple ploughed field

Il s'agit tout simplement d'un champ labouré

A lot of walking and a good eye are necessary...husband an son very intent on their search...

Il faut parcourir le champ et avoir de bons yeux... mon mari et mon fils ont pris leur recherche très au sérieux...

All in all, adults and children alike are having a lot of fun. A visit I therefore recommend!

I am now back in my kitchen for some marathon baking in preparation for the Christmas Market held this Sunday. As some of you know, I am from Lorraine where we celebrate Saint Nicolas on December 6th. Traditionally, Saint Nicolas brings gingerbread, clementines, sweets and chocolates to children who have been good. I am therefore baking traditional gingerbread for the Christmas Market.

For those who live near Dallas, it is held at Dallas International School on Waterview near UTD.

Je suis de retour dans ma cuisine pour un marathon de pâtisserie en préparation du Marché de Noël qui se tient ce dimanche. Comme je l'ai déjà mentionné, je suis Lorraine et c'est une des régions où nous célébrons la Saint Nicolas le 6 décembre. Traditionnellement, Saint Nicolas apporte pains d'épices, clémentines, bonbons et chocolats  aux enfants sages. Je suis donc en train de cuire des pains d'épices traditionnels pour ce Marché de Noël.

Pour ceux qui habitent près de Dallas, ce marché se tient à Dallas International School sur Waterview près de UTD.

A little home decorating / Un peu de déco

I at last found the fabric I liked to make new valance curtains for the kitchen. The curtain rods have remained empty for 6 months...

J'ai enfin trouvé le tissu que j'aimais pour réaliser les nouveaux rideaux de la cuisine. Les tringles sont restés sans rideaux pendant 6 mois...

With preparations for Thanksgiving, I have not been able to do much else. I only started on embroidering the Scandinavian hearts.

Avec les préparatifs pour Thanksgiving, je n'ai pas eu le temps de faire autre chose. J'ai seulement commencé à broder les coeurs scandinaves.

I have opted for N°8 red pearl cotton

This year we are hosting for Thanksgiving Lunch. The pumpkin soup, all the side dishes, sauces, desserts are ready. One day and a half in the kitchen so far, for I do everything from scraps.

Now to the once a year tricky task of cooking the turkey!

Cette année nous recevons pour le déjeuner de Thanksgiving. La soupe de potiron, tous les accompagnements, les sauces et les desserts sont prêts. Une journée et demie passée dans la cuisine, car je n'achète rien qui est préparé.

Et maintenant il me reste la tâche délicate de cuire la dinde!

Little Christmas Elves / Petits Lutins de Noël

I have been making a new set of Christmas elves and took step by step photographs to show you how to make these funny little Christmas decorations. You can hang them in your tree, on your blinds with tiny clothes pins, or put them on your dinner plates for your guests.

Je suis en train de faire des petis lutins de Noël et j'ai donc pris des photos pour vous montrer comment réaliser ces petites décorations de Noël très rigolotes. Vous pouvez les pendre dans votre sapin, les accrocher sur vos stores avec de toutes petites pinces à linge, ou les placer dans les assiettes de vos convives.

Let me introduce you to two of my little elves

You will need:
- pretty buttons
- little bells
- wooden balls 1 inch in diameter or 2,5 cm

And pretty Christmas prints

Et de jolis petits imprimés de Noël

Cut a triangular template

Découper un gabarit triangulaire

You need 3 triangles to make one elf

Vous avez besoin de 3 triangles par lutin

Cut on the lines, sewing margins are included

Découper sur les lignes, les marges de couture sont comprises

Fold right sides together and sew 1/4 along the length

Plier endroit contre endroit et coudre sur la longueur à 7 mm

Trim the tip of the triangle

Couper la pointe du triangle

This is where my chopsticks come in handy...

C'est là que mes baguettes sont très utiles...

Turn over the cone

Retourner le cône

All the way to the tip

Jusqu'à son extrémité

Slip stitch the opening on two out of three cones.

Fermer à points invisibles deux des trois cônes.

Attach a bell to the third one

Attacher un grelot au troisième

Put two closed triangles on top of one another, sewn sides on the outside, with the right angles touching and sew a  pretty button

Placer les deux triangles cousus l'un sur l'autre, côtés cousus sur l'extérieur, avec les angles droits se touchant et coudre un joli bouton

Fold a 1/4" margin inside the third triangle, attach it to the back of the other two and glue a wooden ball

Plier 7mm du bord du troisième triangle vers l'intérieur, attcher à l'arrière des deux autres et coller une boulle en bois

The sewing line of the hood should be place where the two angles at the front meet so it is centered at the back

La couture du bonnet doit être sur le point de rencontre des deux triangles sur le devant pour qu'il soit centré à l'arrière

Voilà!!

When I am done with all of them, I will draw their little faces, the trickiest part for me as I never know what face I am going to get: happy, grumpy... But they are always cute!

Quand j'aurai terminé tous mes petits lutins, il me restera à dessiner leurs visages, le plus difficile pour moi car je ne sais jamais si je vais avoir un lutin joyeux, boudeur... Mais ils sont toujours mignons!
