The kimonos have all been raw-edged appliquéed by machine with coordinated thread. Now to assembling the blocks into a quilt. I first cut each block to measure 7" by 8". I had cut the blocks a bit larger so that I could correct any mishandling from the kids little hands...
Les kimonos ont tous été appliqués à la machine en cousant avec un fil coordonné au ras du bord. Maintenant, il faut assembler les blocs pour réaliser le patch. Je recoupe d'abord chaque bloc afin qu'il mesure 7 par 8 inches. J'avais découpé les fonds un peu plus grand afin de rattraper les effilochages causés par les petites mains des enfants...
I am using a light blue fabric print for the block setting: the strips are cut at 2"
For some reason the blue print seems grey here
J'utilise un imprimé bleu clair pour faire les bordures de chaque bloc: les bandes sont coupées à 2 inches
Cependant l'imprimé bleu apparaît gris sur la photo
Then an indigo blue batik for the inner border cut at 2" too.
Puis un batik bleu indigo pour la bordure intérieure coupé à 2 inches aussi
Each child wrote his name underneath his kimono
The red setting squares are inscribed with a kanji symbol the children have learnt during our workshop
Chaque enfant a écrit son nom sous son kimono
Les carrés rouges portent des symboles kanji que les enfants on appris lors de notre atelier
Each child chose one symbol and reproduced it twice on red 2" squares with paper ironed on the back to make tracing easier
With 18 kids, I had more than needed to make sure I would have 30 good ones. They are only 5 to 6 years old...
Chaque enfant a choisi un symbole qu'il a reproduit sur deux carrés rouge de 2" avec du papier fixé au fer derrière pour rendre le traçage plus aisé
Avec 18 enfants, j'ai eu plus de carrés que nécessaire afin d'être sûre d'en avoir 30 réussis. Ils n'ont que 5 ou 6 ans...
And last the outer border in a vivid red frabric cut at 3 1/2"
Et enfin la bordure extérieure dans un tissu rouge vif coupé à 3 1/2 inches
I have enough of the blue batik and of the red fabric to piece the back with both and I will still have some red left to do the binding. It is seldom that I succeed in using up all the fabric I bought for one quilt!

Il me reste suffisamment de batik bleu et de tissu rouge pour réaliser un dos piécé et il me restera encore de quoi faire le biais de finition en rouge. Il ne m'arrive pas souvent de parvenir à utiliser tout le tissu acheté pour un projet!
