I have a strip of blue chintz that matches this print

J'ai une bande de chintz bleu qui va parfaitement avec cet imprimé

Using my last strip of off-white muslin 

J'utilise ma dernière bande de coton écru

Pretty, don't you think?

Joli, non?

I now have 9 saw-tooth star blocks

J'ai maintenant 9 blocs  étoiles

And because I want to make sure I will not waste the small chintz scraps I have ,

 I have cut them in 1 "1/2  squares

Et pour ne pas gaspiller les petites chutes de chintz, 

je les ai coupées en carrés de 1" 1/2

 

All that is left to do is find a project for these stars...

The solution to my basket points / La solution pour mes pointes de paniers

I knew going out on my bike and breathing in some nice ocean air would help me come up with an idea for my outer basket points. I have often found that taking a break from a project, when one is stuck, always works. 

Je savais qu'une sortie à vélo et quelques bonnes bouffées d'air marin m'aideraient à trouver la solution pour mes pointes de paniers. L'expérience m'a montré que prendre une pause dans la réalisation d'un patch, quand on arrive à un obstacle, permet toujours de surmonter les difficultés. 

This is what is left of the fabrics I have used in the baskets

If I use both for the outer points, I will have enough

I need to be careful when cutting the red orange print, I only have enough for the 36 squares needed

Voici ce qui me reste des tissus que j'ai utilisés pour les paniers

Si j'utilise les deux pour mes pointes extérieures, j'en aurai suffisamment

Il me faut être très prudente en coupant l'imprimé rouge orange, j'en ai juste assez pour les 36 carrés dont j'ai besoin

My 72 squares are cut and this is all I have left of both fabrics

Mes 72 carrés sont coupés et c'est tout ce qu'il me reste des tissus

Fortunately, I have two strips of the cream fabric left

Heureusement, il me reste deux bandes de tissus écru

Now I need to pay attention to the color placement of these basket points

Je dois faire attention à la poisition des couleurs pour ces pointes de paniers

The lighter color on the sides and top, the darker in the middle

La couleur plus claire sur les côtés et pour le haut du panier, la plus foncée au milieu

This Dutch Chintz is great for this block, it does not stretch

I am getting the hang of piecing those basket points

I do not like it. I find this light print does not work with the other more solid ones.

Je n'aime pas du tout. Je trouve que cet imprimé clair ne s'accorde pas du tout avec les autres plus saturés.

This is a disappointment, but I do want this quilt to look great. I cannot continue piecing the baskets knowing the combination of fabrics does not work. I need to find a solution and, for this, I need a break...

Je suis vraiment déçue, mais je tiens à ce que ce patch soit beau. Je ne me vois pas continuer à piécer les paniers sachant que mon choix de tissus n'est pas harmonieux. Je dois trouver une autre solution, et pour cela, je vais faire une pause...

What I like about the Miami area is that every time I get on my bike, I always end up by the sea!

This is where one mustn't rush, but keep steady pace and be precise

C'est lors de cette étape qu'il ne faut surtout pas se presser, mais coudre tranquillement et précisemment

Kim Diehl uses the technique of the squares one sews diagonally to make the flying geese and half square triangles

Let's find a project for those Dutch Chintz / A la recherche d'un patron pour ces chintz hollandais

Remember this diamond quilt I made years ago with Dutch Chintz purchased at the Houston Quilt Show?

Vous vous rappelez ce patch de losanges en chintz hollandais, que j'avais achetés au Quilt Show de Houston?

I have preciously kept the strips I had not used then with all the scraps from this quilt

J'ai conservé précieusement les bandes non utilisées et toutes les chutes de ce patch

I want to find a project that will bring out the beauty of these chintz

I have had this quilt by Kim Diehl in the back of my mind for years...

Je veux un projet qui mettra en valeur la beauté de ces tissus

J'ai en tête ce patch de Kim Diehl depuis des années...

Tiré de son livre Simple Traditions

I want to keep the blue chintz for another project, so I am going to use this bright green chintz instead

Green is a color I seldom use and so it is a bit of a challenge for me

Je veux garder mes bandes de chintz bleues pour un autre projet, je vais donc utiliser ce chintz vert vif

J'utilise rarement du vert dans mes patchs, c'est donc un peu un défi pour moi

I will have the burgundy print for the inner basket points

I do not have enough of the bright red orange print

Je vais prendre l'imprimé bordeaux pour les pointes des paniers intérieures

Je n'ai pas suffisamment de l'imprimé rouge orange

For the outer basket points, I am not sure... one of these two fabrics

Pour les pointes extérieures, je ne suis pas sûre... ce sera l'un de ces deux tissus

The advantage of using these chintz for this project is that the fabric is a bit stiff and therefore does not stretch as regular cotton can when working with triangles.

As long as I am very careful with my margin and piecing, I should have no distortions.

Now to the basket points...

L'avantage d'utiliser du chintz pour ce projet est que le tissu est un peu raide et ne s'étire pas comme le coton, notamment quand on travaille avec des triangles.

Tant que je suis très méticuleuse avec ma marge de couture et le piéçage, je ne devrais pas avoir de distortion.

Passons maintenant aux pointes des paniers...

Discovering the Miami area... / A la découverte des environs de Miami...

We live right by the renown Biltmore Hotel of Coral Gables and I have been eager to see their famous swimming pool. So we went there for dinner and took a look...

Nous habitons à deux pas du très renommé Hotel Biltmore de Coral Gables et je voulais absolument jeter un coup d'oeil à leur célèbre piscine. Nous y sommes donc allés dîner et avons fait un petit tour...

Back to reality and some quilting. Incidentally, I have started a new project. Remember, I need to find that backing fabric for my shoo fly quilt, so in the meantime... I can challenge myself to a new project!

Revenons à la réalité et au patchwork. A ce propos, j'ai commencé un nouveau projet. Vous vous souvenez, je dois trouver le tissu arrière pour mon patch chasse mouches, alors en attendant... je peux m'essayer à un nouveau projet !

After positioning all the blocs, the piecing of the rows

Pressing carefully is crucial

This is when I check the corners of the blocks again 

Je vérifie à nouveau les angles des blocs

And I take the time to piece again some of the rows to have accurate joining of the blocks

Et je prends le temps de démonter et recoudre certaines rangées pour obtenir un assemblage précis

Now I have the result I wanted

Maintenant j'ai le résultat que je désirais

The 3" border in the same blue grey print

La bordure de 3 inches dans le même imprimé bleu gris

And just when I am done, I snip a thread a little too fast and catch a block!

Et juste au moment où j'ai terminé, je coupe un fil un peu vite et attrape un bloc derrière!

Fortunately it is not a pieced block... Back to undoing what I have just finished...

Heureusement, il ne s'agit pas d'un block piécé... Il faut redécoudre ce que je viens de terminer...

Done!!!

I am very happy with the result using this fabric from Primitive Gathering. It is subdued enough to have this vintage feel and it still brings out the shoo fly blocks.

I failed to buy the backing fabric before leaving Texas so I am going to have to leave this aside until I  do so.

Je suis très contente du résultat avec cet imprimé de Primitive Gathering. Il est suffisamment doux pour donner un air ancien au patch, tout en faisant ressortir les blocs chasse mouches.

Je n'ai pas acheté le tissu arrière avant de quitter le Texas. Je vais donc mettre ce projet de côté en attendant de l'acheter.
