Simply Amish Quilt

Mission accomplished. The quilt was finished to be put under the Christmas tree on Christmas Day, and I stitched the sleeve and the label in the smal hours of that very morning! 

Mission accomplie. Le patch a été terminé à temps pour être placé au pied du sapin le jour de Noël, et j'ai cousu la manchon et l'étiquette à l'arrière le matin même!

A bright sunshine was ideal to bring out the colors of this quilt.

I started this quilt in January 2014, during the weekend of quilt retreat I went on with the Dallas Quilters Guild. This has been a long journey, sometimes difficult, but the result is well worth all the hours put into it.

Talking of quilt retreat, I have signed up for the next one in January. I will have to prepare some new project to take along...

In the meantime, I need to piece the kids kimono blocks...

J'ai commencé ce patch en janvier 2014, durant le weekend de retraite que j'ai fait avec la Guilde des Quilteuses de Dallas. Cela a été un long apprentissage, parfois difficile, mais le résultat démontre que toutes les heures de travail en valaient la peine.

Kimono Quilt Class Project / Projet de classe Patch de Kimonos

Well, after spending two afternoons with Kindergarten-aged children, I can tell you it is less exhausting to ride 80 km on my bike!
The little kids loved all the tasks involved in making the kimono appliques and most of them were holding an iron for the first time, with an adult's helpful hand, of course.

Après avoir passé deux après-midi avec des enfants de grande section de maternelle, je peux vous dire qu'il est moins exténuant de faire 80 km à vélo!
Les enfants ont adoré toutes les tâches nécessaires pour réaliser un kimono en appliqué et la plupart tenaient un fer à repasser pour la première fois, avec l'aide d'un adulte, bien sûr.

I had both French and American teachers do their own kimonos so that I would have 20 blocks. Much easier for me to come up with a balanced quilt than with 18 blocks.
The trickiest part with the children was to watch out for those who were itching to pull at threads...

J'ai fait faire à la maîtresse française et américaine leurs propres kimonos afin d'avoir 20 blocs. C'est bien plus facile pour moi de réaliser un patch équilibré qu'avec 18 blocs.
Le plus difficile avec les enfants a été de faire attention à ceux à qui cela démangeait de tirer sur les fils qui dépassaient...

Last stitches / Derniers points

Before I sew the binding on a quilt:

- I iron the sandwich again, with special attention to the border, for the three layers may have shifted a little with the quilting

- I trim the quilt to its final size

- I then baste the edge of the sandwich, so that the three layers will not shift, especially in the corners

Avant de coudre le biais de finition sur un patch:

- Je repasse à nouveau le patch en prêtant attention à la bordure, car les trois épaisseurs ont pu bouger en peu durant le matelassage

- Je coupe le patch à sa taille finale

- Je bâtis tout au bord du sandwich , afin que les trois épaisseurs ne bougent plus, notamment les angles

 My running stitch is very close to the 1/1 margin used for the bias

Mon point de bâtis est très près de la marge d'1/4 inch utilisée pour le biais

When I have finish stitching the bias, I quilt the outer border.

Quand j'ai terminé de coudre le biais, je matelasse la bordure extérieure.

I use weights to hold the quilt in place on the edge of the table and keep it taut while I quilt on the border that hangs on the side

J'utilise des poids pour maintenir le patch en place tout au bord de la table et garder le tissu tendu tandis que je matelasse la bordure qui retombe sur le côté

I then simply move my chair along the length of the table as I progress

Je déplace ensuite ma chaise le long de la table au fur et à mesure que je couds

The difficulty with quilting is that one needs to decide if one has done enough quilting, or if some more is needed. I am in two minds about adding some more in the design. I feel I should have quilted some of the black squares I left empty, but then it means I have 36 squares to quilt, each separately which will involve quite a bit of time... 

But then I may regret not having done and this may be nagging me for years to come!

La difficulté du matelassage à la main est que l'on doit décider si l'on en a assez fait, ou s'il faut encore ajouter des points de matelassage. J'hésite depuis quelques jours sur l'idée d'en ajouter. Il me semble que j'aurais dû matelasser les carrés noirs que j'ai laissé vides, mais cela implique de matelasser séparemment 36 carrés... encore quelques heures de travail...

Mais je risque de regretter de ne pas l'avoir fait et cela va peut-être bien revenir me tarabusquer pendant des années!

In any case, I need to decide soon, I only have one week before it goes under the Christmas tree...

I started hand quilting this project at the start of the new school year and am at last reaching the end! I am not a fast hand quilter and I do not even know how many hours this quilt has taken me... 

I want to finish it for Christmas to offer it to my son in law to be who has been waiting for it for almost a year!

J'ai commencé à matelasser ce projet à la rentrée des classes et j'arrive enfin au bout! Je ne matelasse pas très vite et je ne sais donc même pas combien d'heures j'ai dû lui consacrer...

Je veux le terminer pour Noël afin de l'offrir à mon futur gendre qui l'attend depuis presque un an!

I will now take care of the binding before adding the last stitches on the outer border. I find it is easier that way, for it prevents the border from shifting, especially as the use of a quilting hoop for the border is not practical.

I do not cut my binding on the bias, I have never done so, for I do not like to waste fabric and it always turns out great. I do fold the binding to double the thickness and make it more durable. I cut 2" strips.

Je vais maintenant m'occuper du biais de finition, puis j'ajouterai les derniers point sur la bordure extérieure. Je trouve que c'est plus facile de cette façon, car cela évite d'avoir les épaisseurs qui bougent, étant donné qu'il est difficile d'utiliser un tambour à quilter sur la bordure.

Je ne coupe jamais mon biais de finition dans le biais! Je ne l'ai jamais fait, car je n'aime pas gaspiller de tissu et le résultat est toujours impeccable. Je plie le "biais" en deux pour le doubler et ainsi le rendre plus résistant. Je coupe des bandes de 2" exactement.

A little trip in Texas /Weekend de tourisme au Texas

With the Thanksgiving weekend giving us a few days off, we decided to go to Austin to see Cavelier de La Salle 's ship, La Belle, at the Texas History Museum in Austin. It was found in 1995 off the Texas coast, where it lay for over three centuries, following the tragic expedition led by Cavelier de La Salle to find the mouth of the Mississipi River.

Le weekend de Thanksgiving nous donnant quelques jours de congé, nous avons décidé de nous rendre à Austin voir le bateau de Cavelier de La Salle, La Belle, au Musée d'histoire du Texas à Austin. C'est en 1995 qu'il a été retrouvé au large des côtes texanes, plus de trois siècles après l'expédition tragique de Cavelier de La Salle pour trouver l'embouchure du Mississipi.

Besides the Hull of La Belle, a lot of artifacts are on display including personal possessions and a canon

En plus de l'épave du bâteau La Belle, il y a beaucoup d'objets qui ont été restaurés dont des effets personnels et un canon

It is a museum well worth visiting that recounts the unique history of Texas, the only state of the Union that won its independence and became a Republic.

C'est un musée qui vaut vraiment la peine d'être visité. Il raconte l'histoire extraordinaire du Texas, le seul état de l'Union qui a gagné sa propre indépendance et est devenu une République.

Talking of history... we also spend some time in San Antonio and once again visited the Alamo.

A propos d' histoire... nous sommes allés nous promener à San Antonio et avons une fois encore visité l'Alamo.

Then a stroll along the famous Riverwalk

With the sun setting, the Christmas lights are turned on...
